Many of the people who have witnessed these visions have stressed that the person who had them was not confused, but was both sane and lucid at the time. Jan Mustoe, for example, told us what she noticed when her father, who was dying of cancer was in the last stages of his illness:
On the two days before he passed away he was quite different.
Although in a lot of pain and discomfort, he had softened, was content, and smiled and laughed a lot. He told me his father had been with him (he had, never spoken about him before) and that my mother (who had passed away some 14 years earlier) was in the room, and he spoke to her from time to time. He couldn’t understand why I was unable to see her. I should add that this state of mind was not brought on by any drugs, as apart from paracetamol, he had refused to take anything . . .
