The Art of Dying – Dr Peter and Elizabeth Fenwick
This is Barry Fletcher's account of the day his father died:
We were all around his bed holding his hands, stroking his arms, giving him our family love. I was at the end of his bed where the door was, he beckoned me to him with his hand, I went to him, he said something I didn't quite understand; he kept looking at the doorway at the foot of his bed and talking as if to someone there, then he beckoned again towards the door as if to invite someone in. By then he was completely calm, his breathing became shallower and slower, and finally he passed, away: he was still looking and pointing to the doorway. We are all of the opinion that he was waiting to say goodbye to us and that either his mother, father, brother- or all of them had, come for him.
