Background
Elsewhere we also have [different translator]
"All souls are subject to the trials of transmigration (reincarnation); and men do not know the designs of the Most High with regard to them; they know not how they are being at all times judged, both before coming into this world and when they leave it. They do not know how many transmigrations and mysterious trials they must undergo."
"Souls must reenter the absolute substance whence they have emerged. But to accomplish this end they must develop all the perfections, the germ of which is planted in them; and if they have not fulfilled this condition during one life, they must commence another, a third, and so forth, until they have acquired the condition which fits them for reunion with God."
A description of the experience
Zohar II 096b [translated by Gershom Scholem] – Reincarnation
those souls which ascend from this world in a condition of brightness and purity are put down in the King's archives, each by name; and he says: Here is the soul of this certain one; she appertains to the body which she left.-As it stands written: "Who hath espoused her to himself ".
But "if she please not her master," which means, if she be fouled by sin and guilt, he refuses to designate the same body as before for her, and thus she is deprived of it for ever, save if her Master grant her grace and lead her back again to the body {by transmigration}, for "then he let her be redeemed"
