Rags and tatters are symbols of wounds and gashes in the soul.  More precise meanings are derived from the actual garment which is in tatters

If you see yourself in rags and tatters in a dream or a vision, you have soul loss like Cinderella – soul loss caused by abuse and hurt – the ugly sisters are traumas – child abuse!

Cinderella was taken on the spiritual journey by her spirit helper[fairy godmother] helping her, so that she could met her prince [higher spirit] and be united with him [to obtain moksha] but was told that she had to leave at midnight [the time of rebirth and the dark  night of the soul].  Poor Cinderella she forgot the time and at midnight of the spiritual clock back she was in rags and tatters again.
