Mind is a charity dedicated to helping those with mental health problems. The problems can range from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, to Anxiety, Bipolar disease and Schizophrenia, thus the full range of mental health issues.

Mind not only provide information, but also provide advice and support to anyone experiencing a mental health problem. They also campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding. Their website says:

“We won't give up until everyone experiencing a mental health problem gets support and respect.
Every year, one in four of us will experience a mental health problem.  But hundreds of thousands of people are still struggling to get the support they need. Still unable to access the services that could change their life. Still facing prejudice and misunderstanding.
Mind believes no one should have to face a mental health problem alone. We’ll listen, give you support and advice, and fight your corner. And we’ll push for a better deal and respect for everyone experiencing a mental health problem.
Through our network of local Minds we also provide direct support to almost 250,000 people each year.”

As a charity they have been in operation for some time and have established a very comprehensive range of services that include:

  • An Infoline which offers callers confidential help for the price of a local call

  • A Legal Advice Service which provides information on mental health related law to the public, service users, family members/carers, mental health professionals and mental health advocates

  • The network -  a network of 160 local Mind 'offices' and groups able to offer specialised support and care based on the needs of the communities they support

  • Entries on Facebook and Twitter. They also have a good blog for experiences and insights.

Mind have also recognised that to change the face of mental health you have to change the understanding of those who are given the job of dealing with it – medical people, carers and so on. Thus they also provide:

“a range of national and local training and consultancy services. These include: Mind Workplace - training to develop mentally healthy offices; applied suicide intervention skills; Mental Health First Aid; bespoke training sessions; and a programme of conferences and seminars”.

Mind is independent , which is why I have listed them on this site. They are a charity, rely upon donations, but are funded principally by the public, from trusts and from some companies – but never pharmaceutical companies – and this I think is key, it means they are not there to promote pharmaceuticals as the answer and it means they “can stand up and speak out on the issues that matter.”
