Background

A description of the experience

Mary Rose Barrington, Ian Stevenson and Zofia Weaver, A World in a Grain of Sand: The Clairvoyance of Stefan Ossowiecki,  2005.

A witness whose name appears frequently on the reports of spontaneous experiments is Olgierd Missuna.  He was related to Ossowiecki, being a grandson of Ossowiecki’s mother from her second marriage.  A lawyer by profession, he was a State prosecutor from 1930.  Since this function in Poland’s legal system of the time, involved working closely with the police, investigating criminal cases and securing evidence, he was well equipped to observe and judge the quality of evidence.

In the 1960s he published a number of books recalling various cases he was involved in, which demonstrate a great deal of level-headedness and a good understanding of human nature. We are also indebted to him for the only available account of Ossowiecki's psychokinetic powers.

Missuna witnessed one of Ossowiecki's psychokinetic seances as a small boy in Russia in 1913, in a manor house. Various members of the Ossowiecki, Jacyna, Krieger and Missuna families and their friends were present. The seance seems to have taken place in an enormous hall, perhaps a ballroom. Before the seance, all the furniture and carpets were removed, which caused some delay and annoyed the guests. The audience stood along the walls, a heavy chair was placed in the middle of the room, and Ossowiecki was tied to the chair by experts, both arms and legs.

In the corner of the room there was one object left - a heavy piano. This was the object the young psychic was to move by psychokinesis.

Unfortunately, after witnesses verified that Ossowiecki was properly tied down, everyone had to leave the room in total silence. He was left alone with the piano, which was 10 m away. Five minutes later people were asked back. Ossowiecki was still in his chair, pale with effort, and the piano stood next to him.
