The following observation comes from an era when cinema seats were like comfy armchairs. The warmth of the cinema, the softness of the chair and the dark surroundings would all have helped. I have speculated with Reverse REM - old cinema projectors flickered

Out of the Body Experiences – Celia Green
I was in the cinema and I was watching a film from the front seat in the balcony. All at once I found myself out in space about 3ft over the edge of the balcony and I was watching myself sat in the seat. I noted the projection box at the rear of the cinema
