A description of the experience
Amnon Shiloah – Jewish and Muslim Traditions of Music therapy [in Music as Medicine]
The music therapist Chava Sekeles states that therapy can usually be achieved either by excitation or by relaxation; that is to say, either by means of an ecstatic state provoked by a strong rhythmic stimulus believed to drive away evil forces, or by an hypnotic state usually produced by repetitive music of an incantatory nature through which harmony can be restored to the patient's body and soul.
Both methods are universally known and can be traced to a remote past. Indeed, from antiquity until this very day, when…. the medical profession increasingly accepts the efficacy of music therapy, music has been widely recognized among both primitive and sophisticated societies as a medium possessing curative powers.
