Type of Spiritual Experience

Background

A description of the experience

BY THE SEA

Islands out on the ocean ; then,
Remote in the heat-haze, islands again !
On those that dapple the central sea
Are inch-high horses and pea-sized men.
On those far out you may scarce divine
Aught but the shimmering long low line,
Scarce be sure of the forest and cloud
Which is the cloud and which is the pine.
The boats of the fishermen, wandering free
From end to end of the dazzling sea,
Float like a fleet of the curled-up
leaves
Dropped on a pool by the boughs of a
tree.

Here on the shore in a sheltered place
I fell asleep for a dozing space,
And only awoke when the soft sea-wind,
Cooler than ice, went over my face.
